x Lady Margaret Stewart and Lady Jeanette Stewart are both daughters of James IV King of Scotland and two of his mistresses. This is why they are referred to on this list as Lady rather than Princess. Lady is the title for the daughters of Earls and Dukes but also the title properly used for the daughters of a King and his mistresses. Only the daughters of a King and his Queen are properly titled Princess. Lady Jeanette was born Janet but known most of her life as Jeanette because she was named that in France where she lived for a long time as governess to her niece, Mary Queen of Scots, and by the members of the Scottish court many of whom spoke French at that time.
